Sunset Beach Wall Art

This Epoxy Beach Wall Art with LED Sunset was a lot of fun to make! The sunset colors came out great with just painting tinted epoxy onto a piece of acrylic, but individually programmable LEDs could be used instead. Also, I made the maple panel, but you can buy ready to use panels at most big box stores!

  1. Make the Panel

I opted to make my panel from some maple. But you could also do this on plywood, or buy a project panel from a big box store (which would be cheaper than the maple I used to make this panel).

The panel construction is like any other. The lumber was milled, glued together, and then sanded flat. This one was a bit different for me though because it was my first time using my domino. If you don’t have a domino and want an in-depth guide on making panels, check out this video and article.

2. Pour the Epoxy

This one requires me to defer to Jess’ expertise. She has a whole class on it and honestly I’m not that great at it. She also has lots of technique videos available on her Instagram!

3. LED Sunset

This fits behind the art piece, so first thing I had to do was cut my French cleat pieces so I would know how wide to cut my acrylic strip. The acrylic strip was cut just slightly narrower than the French cleats are thick to make sure it’ll fit fine.

Before painting the sunset strip I scuffed it with sandpaper to help the epoxy adhere. Then I mixed up four small batches of epoxy tinted with alcohol ink. Starting in the middle and working my way to the outside I painted sections that were yellow, orange, magenta, and purple. I did my best to blend the sections a bit.

I wanted mine to arch, so I bandsawed out some little clips to hold the acrylic arch and brad nailed them to the back of the piece.

Then the French cleat was installed and the LED strip was adhere to the top of the French cleat, under the sunset strip.

4. Hang the Sunset Beach Wall Art on the Wall!

I really like how easy it is to hang stuff with French cleats. I just found the studs, screwed the opposing cleat into them (with a level on top to keep it level) and then set the art piece on it!
